What is VAT (BTW)?
VAT β Value Added Tax, known as BTW (Belasting over de Toegevoegde Waarde) in the Netherlands and Belgium β is a consumption tax added at each stage of the supply chain. Although businesses collect and remit it, the cost is ultimately borne by the final consumer. More than 170 countries operate a VAT or GST system, making it one of the most widespread taxes in the world.
A price can be quoted two ways: excluding VAT (the net amount, common in business-to-business invoices) or including VAT (the gross amount the consumer pays). This calculator converts between the two in either direction.
How to add and remove VAT
The maths is straightforward once you know whether your starting figure includes the tax or not:
Add VAT: Gross = Net Γ (1 + rate/100)
Remove VAT: Net = Gross Γ· (1 + rate/100)
VAT amount: Gross β NetWorked example (21%): a product costs β¬100 excluding VAT. The VAT is β¬100 Γ 0.21 = β¬21, so the consumer pays β¬121. To work backwards from β¬121 including VAT: β¬121 Γ· 1.21 = β¬100 net, leaving β¬21 of VAT.

Frequently asked questions
Do I include VAT in my prices? Businesses selling to consumers usually display VAT-inclusive prices, while B2B invoices typically show net prices plus VAT separately.
Can I reclaim VAT? VAT-registered businesses can generally deduct the VAT they pay on business purchases (input VAT) from the VAT they charge customers (output VAT), remitting only the difference to the tax authority.
