What makes a memorable slogan?

A slogan (also called a tagline) is a short phrase that encapsulates your brand's essence, promise, or personality. The best slogans become inseparable from the brand — "Just Do It," "Think Different," "Because You’re Worth It" are immediately identifiable without even mentioning the brand name. They work because they are short, emotionally resonant, and say something meaningful about the customer’s aspiration, not just the company’s product.

Types of slogans and when to use them

Descriptive
"The World’s Online Marketplace" (eBay)
Best for: Launch phase; new brand needing to explain what it does
Benefit-led
"Saves You Money. Period." (Budget car rental)
Best for: Competitive markets where one key benefit differentiates you
Aspirational / emotional
"Just Do It" (Nike)
Best for: Established brands selling identity and aspiration, not features
Question
"Got Milk?" (California Dairy)
Best for: Creating engagement; perfect for campaigns where curiosity drives recall
Imperative / call to action
"Think Different" (Apple)
Best for: Brands with strong values wanting to invite customers into a worldview
Rhyme / rhythm
"Snap, Crackle, Pop" (Rice Krispies)
Best for: Consumer products, especially targeting younger audiences

Slogan testing checklist

  • Is it under 10 words? The most memorable slogans average 4–7 words. Every additional word reduces memorability.
  • Could it work for a competitor? If your slogan could belong to a different brand in your industry, it is too generic. "Quality you can trust" works for any company in any industry — that is its fatal flaw.
  • Does it speak to the customer’s aspiration or pain? The best slogans are about the customer’s desired self, not the company’s product features.
  • Will it still be relevant in 10 years? Trend-based or date-specific language dates quickly. "We're going digital" was dated the moment it was written.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a memorable slogan?

Short, clear and distinctive. The best slogans convey a benefit or feeling, are easy to remember, and reflect your brand's personality.

How long should a slogan be?

Usually three to seven words. Brevity makes it easy to recall and repeat, which is the whole point of a slogan.

Should a slogan describe what I do?

It can, but the strongest slogans evoke a benefit or emotion rather than just listing a service. Aim for memorable over literal.

Can I trademark a slogan?

Often yes, if it is distinctive and used in commerce. Check existing trademarks first, then register to protect it in your market.
